Stop VPN and proxy abuse on Google Ads
Fraudsters route clicks through VPN services, Tor exit nodes, and anonymous proxies to disguise their location and evade IP-based exclusions on Google Ads.

Anonymised traffic is exploiting Google Ads geo-targeting gaps
Geographic targeting is one of Google Ads' most powerful controls, but it depends on accurate location data. When fraudsters route clicks through commercial VPN services or residential proxy networks, they can appear to originate from any city or country in the world. An advertiser targeting London professionals may unknowingly be serving clicks to a fraud operation in a completely different region, with the click costs debited as if the traffic were exactly the audience being purchased.
VPN and proxy abuse also undermines frequency capping and audience exclusions. A fraudster who has been excluded from your remarketing list can simply reconnect through a different proxy exit node and appear as a brand-new visitor. Tapper identifies anonymising infrastructure at the network layer, flagging VPN, Tor, and data-centre proxy endpoints regardless of the apparent geographic origin they present to Google.
How Tapper stops vpn and proxy abuse on Google
Three steps from connection to clean data, no engineering required.
01
Identify VPN and proxy exit nodes
Tapper cross-references every click's originating IP against a continuously updated database of commercial VPN providers, residential proxy pools, Tor exit relays, and anonymising infrastructure.
02
Detect location spoofing via browser signals
Timezone, system locale, GPS permissions, and WebRTC leaks are compared against the declared IP location to identify sessions where the user is masking their real geographic position.
03
Enforce geo-targeting integrity across campaigns
Clicks identified as anonymised are excluded from campaign reporting and conversion tracking, so your geo-performance data reflects real audiences in the regions you are paying to reach.

Tor exit node blocking
Full Tor exit relay list updated every 30 minutes from authoritative sources
No dedicated Tor detection; exit nodes treated as regular traffic
Location spoofing detection
Cross-references IP geolocation against browser timezone, locale, and WebRTC leaks
Relies solely on IP geolocation with no browser-level location verification
Geo-targeting audit reporting
Shows exactly which regions your budget actually reached after anonymised traffic removed

“Tapper's blocking technology purifies our paid media traffic which roughly equates to a 36x return against its subscription costs. It's certainly one of the easiest-to-implement tools in our entire marketing stack.”

Reno Mindemann
Head of Growth, Kama Capital

“We've been using Tapper for over a year now, and it has become a core part of how we run paid media. Invalid traffic was always something we knew existed but couldn't really act on. Tapper changed that. We're now saving up to $50K per year, and on PureSquare specifically, we saw around a 20% decrease in CPA. Based on these results, we decided to roll it out across other ventures under Disrupt as well.”

Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about stopping vpn and proxy abuse on Google Ads.
Tapper applies a risk-tiered approach. Commercial VPN services and Tor exits are blocked at high confidence. Residential proxies are scored with additional behavioral signals before a decision is made. If your audience legitimately includes privacy-focused users, thresholds can be adjusted per campaign so you're not excluding genuine privacy-tool users alongside fraudsters.
VPN server switching changes the exit IP but does not change the browser fingerprint, system locale, timezone, or WebRTC leak pattern. Tapper uses these secondary signals to maintain detection even when a fraudster rotates through multiple VPN endpoints. A new exit IP alone is not sufficient to evade the full set of checks Tapper applies.
Google bills clicks based on the IP location it observes, which a VPN can manipulate. If a fraudster uses a UK VPN exit to click your UK-targeted campaign, Google charges UK CPC rates for traffic that never originated in your target market. Tapper's detection prevents these mis-attributed clicks from depleting your geo-specific budget.
